The Documentary

Real Families – A Diary of a Mother on the Edge, ITV 20 May 07

Narrated by Felicity Kendall

A documentary showing Spink family-life and the constant battles with the local authority to secure the right amount of care and support for the boys.

Henrietta has a dream that one day her elder son, Henry, will stand alone, reading a book in the library.  Even though Henry cannot walk or talk, Henrietta has used the Internet to track down medical research and seek out doctors worldwide in her quest to secure Henry’s awakening. Brain scans have revealed Henry’s brain in normal, so why won’t he function? Can the neural pathways be the problem?

The documentary ends with the family leaving the UK, but still with the hope for a medical breakthrough with doctors in the USA.

Filming took place BEFORE the latest developments with the American doctors and new footage is being considered to update the programme.
